Edward Ardizzone, born in Haiphong to a naturalised French pied-noir father of Italian descent and English mother has, since childhood, been a favourite illustrator and, in book form, constantly entertaining rotund companion. His line illustrations leap off the page, overflowing with humorous observations.  Ardizzone learned his craft taking evening art classes, drawing in London pubs, as a war artist.  His childhood spent on the Suffolk coast inspired a series of books about a brave young hero called Tim.
