Soon our small town (which has a serious budget deficit) will be voting in a new mayor (or re-electing the old one) and candidates are promising to increase spending, build new schools, introduce CCTV, wave magic wands and cut taxes. Sickeningly here, as elsewhere in Europe, there will also be a candidate for the National Front.
