Until yesterday, I’d never heard of Flora Sandes, the only British woman officially to serve as a soldier in the 1914-18 war. Fighting in the Balkans, this remarkably brave Captain and is still fondly remembered and highly revered by Serbs, who awarded her their highest decoration, the King George Star.
