A thoroughly dispiriting experience, sitting in driving rain watching your national U18s rugby squad lose against Portugal! Weather conditions were ridiculous: everything – players, ball, occasional startled pigeons attempting to land – skidded across the pitch. The score was 0-0 but Scotland lost on penalty kicks. Who even knew the Portuguese play rugby??
