I don’t generally go in for heroes, but one of my few is Scots rugby international & Olympic 400m gold medalist Eric Liddell. Born in China, he died there in a Japanese Prisoner of War Camp, aged 43. Churchill arranged for his release but, characteristically, Liddell insisted a pregnant woman be freed in his place.
