I was pondering what makes an enduring children’s book character when I sat down next to an elderly couple on the bus and surprised them by asking what they’d enjoyed reading as children. Lively discussions followed about Just William, the Eagle, rule breaking and mischief.  Fellow passengers all plugged in to phones.
