In 1947 the chaos, confusion and religious violence unleashed when, after almost three centuries, British colonial rule ended and Pakistan was carved out of India, resulted in who knows how many ten? twenty? million people being displaced, tens of thousands – two million? – of whom died. There are no tallies for how many were raped.
