From a splendid book called LOST LONDON: In May 1941 a German bombing raid destroyed one of the Royal College of Surgeons’ museum galleries.  Alcohol in thousands of specimen jars fuelled the ensuing fire. Later, bemused local children talked of finding the streets around Lincoln’s Inn strewn with dead babies in jars.
