Ancient and modern, cheek by jowl: that mad gherkin seeming to shoot out of a row of Victorian shops; brutalist post-war architecture towering over a medieval bastion & Roman wall; opposite a Renaissance palace, a glass tower block from the 12th floor of which you can see not only a vast metropolis, but green hills.
