A small child said she’d seen “gendarmes” making love. I later realised she was talking about colourful members of the Pyrrhocoridae family – firebugs in English, but gendarmes in French.  Hereabouts you see masses of them in tandem, mating apparently taking anything from 12 hours to a staggering 7 days!
